What is a Baby Carrier

A baby carrier is a device usually made of soft, comfortable material that allows you to wear your baby on your person. Baby carriers are beneficial while traveling as well as at home for many reasons. A baby carrier keeps babies and toddlers close which promotes healthy bonding. Baby wearing is shown to help babies regulate temperature and feel safe and loved outside the womb.

Baby carriers allow your hands to be free and let you do normal daily duties when you have a baby that is fussy and doesn’t want to be put down. Carriers can also be helpful on the go because baby can nap or nurse as you stay active or get grocery shopping done.

The tricky part is finding the best baby carriers for traveling that you will be doing and keeping your baby comfortable.

Stroller vs Baby Carrier for Travel

Although a travel stroller can be helpful and serve a purpose in some cases a baby carrier offers an easy solution to several difficult travel situations. There are many situations like cobblestones, stairs and public transportation where strollers are big and bulky and really just a hassle to deal with. A baby carrier on the other hand is a simple and elegant way to keep baby close by on your person that still allows you to visit anywhere unencumbered.

Some locations have rules against strollers and some crowds could make a stroller a huge burden. Additionally the added benefit of having your hands free to help with luggage or eat food makes using a baby carrier while traveling a no brainer.

Different Types of Carriers for Travel with Babies

There are many different types of baby carriers and different style of carrier within each carrier category on top of that. Here we will walk through the infant carrier styles, what body types they typically work with and what makes them a good choice.

Wrap-Style Carriers

A baby wrap carrier is a long piece of fabric that is used to tie the baby to your body. Wrap carriers keep the baby close and are usually flexible enough to allow for breastfeeding while wearing the wrap. One downside is that there is often a learning curve to figuring out a baby wrap. Make sure you learn how to use it properly before relying on it while traveling or for day to day use.

Baby wraps are very lightweight, small and will pack very easily into a diaper bag, carry-on, or suitcase. Always an important factor to consider when traveling and space is limited.

Wrap carriers are a one size fits all product which can be good for any plus size parents out there. Usually made from a woven or stretchy material the baby wraps tend to be very affordable options. A stretchy wrap will have more give but may sag over time as you wear them. The woven wraps are less forgiving when tying them but are better at holding their position over several hours.

Baby wraps are best for newborns and small babies especially if they are going to be worn for long periods of time (like sight-seeing) because they do not have the padding of a soft structured carrier.

Hip Carrier

A hip carrier is an aid to the normal way you are probably carrying your baby: on your hip. The carrier distributes the babies weight more evenly across your body which can be beneficial.

However the hip carry position is not going to allow you to be hands free in most cases and the hip carries can be fairly bulky. They also are not as beneficial for long days of sight seeing and being on the move because they are not comfortable when they have to be used for a long time. This is why, although they may be great to use at home for some, I do not recommend any hip carriers for traveling.

Ring Sling

A ring sling is a long piece of fabric and two metal rings that form a sling shape that will hold your baby snug and close to you. Ring sling carriers tend to be easier to learn how to use than the baby wraps. The ring sling is very lightweight, small and will pack very easily into a diaper bag, carry-on, or suitcase. Plus it makes for easy storage at home as well.

Many ring slings also allow for breastfeeding which can be very useful when traveling during a baby’s first year of life. Ring slings are also one of the best carriers for toddlers which can make for an easy transition and mean purchasing less carriers overall.

One big downside to ring slings is that the weight is carried by one shoulder which can get heavy and very uncomfortable after a while. Some Dad’s may also feel uncomfortable wearing a ring sling so make sure you check with them before packing only slings for a fully packed vacation.

Soft-Structured Carriers

A soft structured carrier (SSC) is exactly what it sounds like, a carrier made of soft padded material that contains some structure for positioning the baby. The structure usually comes from buckles and snaps that can be adjusted to the babies changing size.

Most soft structured baby carriers can also be adjusted to fit the parent which is great when more than one person will be using the carrier on a regular basis. The straps of a SSC help distribute the babies weight evenly across the back and hips making them comfortable to wear for long periods of time and for light hiking.

Many Dads feel more comfortable wearing SSC’s than baby wraps or ring slings. They also tend to have higher weight limits which means they can be used for longer often even into toddler age.

Another plus for soft structured carriers is that they can be worn on the front or the back depending on your needs and the babies preferences. Some carriers contain small pockets which can be helpful for keeping small items in easy reach throughout the day.

Structured Backpack Carriers

Finally we have the structured backpack carrier, these are the best baby carriers for hiking and long outdoor trips. They are the heaviest and bulkiest option but they definitely serve a purpose. These carriers have metal frames and more storage than any other carrier. The baby has a small seat-like position which is more comfortable for long periods of time.

The structured backpacks also carry the baby higher up which allows them to see more over mom or dad’s head. They also have shoulder and waist straps that help distribute the weight more evenly and make these one of the most comfortable carriers for carrying your baby as possible for as long as possible.

If you are looking into a roadtrip with a lot of outdoor activities then you should consider a structured backpack carrier as an option. If you’re flying then it still may be worth it but you have to consider transporting it or look into rental options.

baby wearing on vacation allows you to have free hands and easy mobility. These are the eleven best baby carriers for travel to give mom, dad and baby the most comfortable experience while sightseeing, hiking or having a night out on the town. Dad shows off the best baby carrier for travel that we use everyday in our house.

Benefits to Using a Baby Carrier While Traveling

Airport Travel

Using a baby carrier for air travel offers several benefits over a stroller. Your hands will be free to deal with luggage or other children. There is even the possibility that you’ll be able to leave baby on while going through security. This isn’t always the case but it is a huge plus when you can.

Also when you are rushing between gates or trekking along on the long walk from your gate to baggage claim it is so much easier when and easier to maneuver without a stroller.

Flexible and Convenient

Using a baby carrier when traveling can make many situations easier to handle. If you run into cobblestones or stairs or sand wherever you are visiting then you don’t have to worry. While these things would be difficult to handle with a stroller, especially if you’re traveling alone with your baby, you can make quick work of them if you are traveling with a baby carrier.

Lightweight

Baby carriers are very lightweight which is always helpful when traveling. There are always space and weight limit concerns when you are traveling and you are trying to avoid paying through the nose to bring what you need.

Hands Free

An important factor to consider when picking the best baby carrier for traveling is if it will leave your hands free. Having your hands free while on vacation is so nice! Not only does it make dealing with luggage easier but it can allow you to eat on the go, open doors easier or hold your spouse’s hand as you enjoy the sights.

Public Transportation

Have you been on a train during rush hour or a bus in a big city? They are often crowded and there is not a lot of room. Getting a stroller on and off each vehicle can be difficult even if there is room. A carrier avoids all this by being small and close to you.

Small and Crowded Areas

Just like I mentioned with the crowds on public transportation, baby carriers can be helpful in any crowded area or small space. Whether you are shopping in a small souvenir shop or visiting a very popular tourist destination a baby carrier can do it all. Strollers can’t always.

Napping on the Go

The best baby carriers for travel are going to allow your baby to nap on the go. When traveling it can be hard to keep to your regular schedules and routines. But you don’t want to have to stop and waste your precious vacation time on naps everyday. My baby falls asleep super easily in our carrier which allows us to keep sightseeing during the day while keeping him happy and rested at the same time!

No Wandering

If your kiddo is old enough to crawl or walk then you probably feel like you are constantly chasing them around as they explore the world around them. While some exploration is good there are times when you need them to stay close by and not wander off. A baby carrier may be just the thing to keep your baby happy and contained at the same time.

How to Choose the Best Travel Baby Carrier

Choosing the best baby carrier for traveling is going to depend on what you need to use it for and your personal comfort needs and personal preferences. If you have back problems you’re going to want a different carrier than someone that will be backpacking to Machu Picchu. Not to mention that there are several different styles of carriers which may affect your choice.

Here are some things to consider when you’re picking the perfect travel carrier for your baby:

  • Safety
  • Comfort of baby
  • Parent body type and needs
  • Climate
  • Ease of Use
  • Washability
  • Price
  • Age of baby (and how long you plan to use it)
  • Looks

Baby Wearing and Baby Carrier Safety

There are a few important safety features to note when choosing any baby carrier. A baby’s airway should be open and not compromised. You should always be able to see your babies head and face and the head should be supported until they have full head control themselves. Also make sure that their head is not held too closely to your chest or that their head is held to their own chest which can block their airways.

Always listen to suggested weight limits, both maximum and minimums, for the safest use. A baby that is too small could shift and suffocate in a carrier that is too big. Additionally a baby that is too big may cause a carrier to break or come undone which would cause them harm if they fell out.

Lastly, make sure you look at quality and durability. A higher price does not always correlate directly to better quality but you should not keep using a cheap product if it does not seem sturdy and well made.

Choosing the Best Baby Carrier for Your Travels

The best baby carrier for traveling is going to largely depend on what kind of traveling you are going to be doing.

If you are going to be hiking then I recommend a structured backpack carrier. However, if your baby is really young then a wrap carrier may be your best bet before they reach the minimum weight limits of the soft structured carriers. And if you are a breastfeeding mom with a nonstop travel itinerary then you will want a carrier that will allow you to breastfeed on the go.

TLike with most things in life, there is no one size fits all option when it comes to a baby carrier for travel or life in general. I recommend picking two or three top priorities and choosing the carrier that best fulfills those.

The Best Baby Carriers for Traveling and Sightseeing

There is the list of the best baby carriers for traveling, they all have rave reviews and are parent tried and tested. When you are traveling you are bound to run into situations that are less than ideal for a stroller and it is uncomfortable and impractical to carry your baby around for long amounts of time in your arms. That is why a good baby carrier is on my list of must-have baby travel essentials no matter where I am going.

Choosing the best carriers is no small feat, when you baby wear while traveling it should leave your hands free, makes airport security a breeze and be easy to pack up. I know you’ll find the best option for you though!
