Wrap-Style Carriers
A baby wrap carrier is a long piece of fabric that is used to tie the baby to your body. Wrap carriers keep the baby close and are usually flexible enough to allow for breastfeeding while wearing the wrap. One downside is that there is often a learning curve to figuring out a baby wrap. Make sure you learn how to use it properly before relying on it while traveling or for day to day use.
Baby wraps are very lightweight, small and will pack very easily into a diaper bag, carry-on, or suitcase. Always an important factor to consider when traveling and space is limited.
Wrap carriers are a one size fits all product which can be good for any plus size parents out there. Usually made from a woven or stretchy material the baby wraps tend to be very affordable options. A stretchy wrap will have more give but may sag over time as you wear them. The woven wraps are less forgiving when tying them but are better at holding their position over several hours.
Baby wraps are best for newborns and small babies especially if they are going to be worn for long periods of time (like sight-seeing) because they do not have the padding of a soft structured carrier.
Hip Carrier
A hip carrier is an aid to the normal way you are probably carrying your baby: on your hip. The carrier distributes the babies weight more evenly across your body which can be beneficial.
However the hip carry position is not going to allow you to be hands free in most cases and the hip carries can be fairly bulky. They also are not as beneficial for long days of sight seeing and being on the move because they are not comfortable when they have to be used for a long time. This is why, although they may be great to use at home for some, I do not recommend any hip carriers for traveling.
Ring Sling
A ring sling is a long piece of fabric and two metal rings that form a sling shape that will hold your baby snug and close to you. Ring sling carriers tend to be easier to learn how to use than the baby wraps. The ring sling is very lightweight, small and will pack very easily into a diaper bag, carry-on, or suitcase. Plus it makes for easy storage at home as well.
Many ring slings also allow for breastfeeding which can be very useful when traveling during a baby’s first year of life. Ring slings are also one of the best carriers for toddlers which can make for an easy transition and mean purchasing less carriers overall.
One big downside to ring slings is that the weight is carried by one shoulder which can get heavy and very uncomfortable after a while. Some Dad’s may also feel uncomfortable wearing a ring sling so make sure you check with them before packing only slings for a fully packed vacation.
Soft-Structured Carriers
A soft structured carrier (SSC) is exactly what it sounds like, a carrier made of soft padded material that contains some structure for positioning the baby. The structure usually comes from buckles and snaps that can be adjusted to the babies changing size.
Most soft structured baby carriers can also be adjusted to fit the parent which is great when more than one person will be using the carrier on a regular basis. The straps of a SSC help distribute the babies weight evenly across the back and hips making them comfortable to wear for long periods of time and for light hiking.
Many Dads feel more comfortable wearing SSC’s than baby wraps or ring slings. They also tend to have higher weight limits which means they can be used for longer often even into toddler age.

If you are going to be hiking then I recommend a structured backpack carrier. However, if your baby is really young then a wrap carrier may be your best bet before they reach the minimum weight limits of the soft structured carriers. And if you are a breastfeeding mom with a nonstop travel itinerary then you will want a carrier that will allow you to breastfeed on the go.
TLike with most things in life, there is no one size fits all option when it comes to a baby carrier for travel or life in general. I recommend picking two or three top priorities and choosing the carrier that best fulfills those.
