Our Visit to Hunsader Farms

At the end of March 2021 my husband and I visited Hunsader Farms in Bradenton Florida with our three month old son to pick flowers. We live just North of Tampa so it took us roughly an hour and a half to drive to Hunsader Farms.

Once we arrived we parked, got ourselves ready and headed over to the main building. There were lots of signs that helped direct us to the Farm Market building where you can pay with a credit card for your visit to the u-pick flower fields. If you are paying with cash then you can head straight to the flower fields and pay at the fields entrance.

After paying, the employees will hand you your cup. The $8 fee is for five dollars worth of flowers but for an extra four dollars you can purchase their souvenir cup which is a reusable plastic cup that has their logo on it.

The cup is the same size either way and will fit the same amount of flowers in it.

Picking the Flowers

Now you head into the flower fields and you get to cut as many flowers as you can fit into your cup. Make sure you have them put water in your cup before you start picking to extend the life of your flowers. Once they are picked they’ll start wilting under the hot sun fairly quickly. It is important to note that you have to bring your own clippers (or scissors) to cute the flowers with.

I recommend heading into the middle of the field to start picking your flowers because it will get you away from the crowds and the flowers are less picked over.

The flower fields are large and we never felt crowded while we were there. It was so fun picking out which blooms to cut and take home. Make sure you check out the wildflower fields that are behind the zinnia field. There are some beautiful and unique flowers there although the wild flowers did wilt the fastest for me.

While you are at the flower fields also make sure to snag some pictures! It is such a beautiful setting and the blooms really pop in photos! I had so much fun taking pictures with my 3 month old baby in the flowers.

Flower Picking Tips

  • When picking flowers, take the leaves off of the stem before putting it into the cup to fit more flowers.
  • Make sure you cut long stems (try cutting near the roots) to be sure they’ll fit any vase height.
  • Wear shoes that can get dirty. I wore white shoes but got lucky because the ground was very dry.
  • There is no shade in the fields so bring sun protection. Wear sunscreen, hats, sunglasses etc.
  • I also recommend bringing extra water. You’ll get thirsty in the hot sun and you may need extra water for the flowers depending on your drive home or if you spill any in the field.
  • Lastly, try going earlier in the day for cooler temperatures and to beat the crowds.
