Sunflower Season

A lot of factors can affect exactly when a sunflower blooms from the amount of rain and sun they get to when they were planted. Sunflowers peak times in Kansas is from late summer to early fall, around August through early September. Of course plants are variable and don’t follow exact dates so depending on the year you can find sunflowers in full bloom as early as mid-july through late September and even early October.

To make sure you don’t miss sunflower season I recommend you start checking each farm’s facebook page in July or early August. Once sunflowers bloom, the peak bloom lasts 10-14 days. By the end of August or beginning of September a few fields are usually in peak bloom.

Sunflower Picking Tips

  • It is a good idea to wear closed toed shoes as well to keep the dirt out and protect your feet.
  • Sunny days are the best days to see the sunflowers but they get hot so the best time of day to visit the sunflower farms is mid morning or in the evenings near sunset.
  • Leave no trace, that means pick up your trash, don’t destroy the crops and respect everyone else visiting the fields too.
  • Some sunflower farms offer a season pass which could lead to big savings if you live nearby and hope to visit often. Always make sure to check their website or ask about the pass in person if you are interested.
  • Professional Photographers are usually required to purchase a photo pass before before gaining sunflower field access. Information on these passes can also be found on each farms individual website.
