I love fresh bread and this easy french bread recipe is one of the best I’ve found and, bonus, it’s quick. The egg glaze on top gives it a nice crust and golden brown.
I first got this french bread recipe from one of my freshman roommates in college. We were going to dinner with our neighbors after church and we needed a fast bread to make that didn’t take an hour or more to rise. So this recipe saved the day! With only a 15 minute rise time and still tasting ah-mazing!
We baked it and brought it fresh out of the oven as two French loaves to our dinner party and everyone loved it! Since then I have made it countless number of times and it never fails to impress. It’s a win for everyone as it’s easy for me and delicious to eat. Then about a year ago I tried making Panera’s broccoli cheddar soup and I wanted to eat it out of bread bowls. Well what do you know, this recipe works incredibly well for that too! Simply make 4 round loaves instead of 2 long loaves and the rest is the same. That was such a good meal, you should try it.
Well I hope you enjoy this recipe as much as we do!

Ingredients:
- 2 ½ c Warm Water
- 2 Tbsp Yeast
- ½ Tbsp Salt
- 2 Tbsp Sugar
- 5 ½ c Flour
- Olive oil
- 1 egg white
Instructions:
Make sure to pre-heat the oven to 450 F.
Mix all the ingredients, except the egg white, in a large bowl and knead until smooth. Cover the dough with a thin layer of oil and let the dough rise for 15 minutes.
Divide into 2 French bread loaves or 4 bread bowls and place on a cookie baking sheet. Slit diagonally across the top with a knife and brush the tops with a beaten egg white. The egg adds a nice glossy sheen and makes for a hard crust on top of the bread.
Cook for 15 minutes until the center is no longer doughy. Let it cool and enjoy! For bread bowls simply cut out the center and fill with soup.
