Redecorating can be really fun but it can also be hard to stay focused. Maybe something looks cute but doesn’t fit the look or theme you’re going for, or you over do it and bust your budget. Whatever it is that threw you off track it can make decorating a burden rather that a joy. Remember you are building a space to be enjoyed by you and the ones you love. This should be FUN! If you follow these 5 simple steps to decorating a room I promise that decorating will be 10x easier.
1. Color Scheme
First things first, when redecorating you need to decide what colors you are going for. When I redecorated our master bedroom I knew I wanted black and white. But when I think about doing our living room there are so many different color schemes I could see working that I would enjoy. That makes it really hard to narrow down a decor and keep things tied together. One thing to keep in mind is furniture. Are you wanting to get new furniture? Because if not then you are going to have to decorate around the furniture you have. If you have a red couch then maybe a coastal color theme won’t work.
Narrow it down to one color scheme and lock that in your mind.
2. Inspiration
Next is my favorite part of redecorating: inspiration! And of course my go to place for inspiration is Pinterest! You are going to create a board devoted to this re-do. I named mine Master Bedroom (it is a sub-board under home decorating). Now scour Pinterest and pin everything you like that fits your color scheme. I literally search black and white bedrooms and just went ham pinning everything.
Actually fill in the comment section and write under each pin what it is you like from the picture. Is it the lamps? The way they displayed the pillows? Maybe you like the way they put mirrors over the night stands and you’d never seen that before. Use these boards to get inspiration for the big and the small details.
3. Budget
Ok, this part might not be a fun. However, it is necessary. You have to set a budget so that you know what parameters to work in. You don’t want to blow all your money on two big items and then realize you don’t have enough money for everything you wanted to get done. So make sure you know your budget.
Maybe do a little research into the average price of some items you know you want to put in. I was completely caught off guard when I did our bedroom re-do by the cost of lamps. Who knew such a common item could cost so dang much.
TIP: Remember when redecorating you don’t have to buy everything full-price brand new. Use sales, thrift stores, and yard sales to bring the cost down and stretch your budget further.
4. Prioritize
Now you have to prioritize everything you want to get done in that room. I knew the bed and night stands were the focal point of the bedroom so the majority of my budget went into that area of the bedroom. Things like small decorations and wall decor I waited to purchase until I was happy with the night stands and bed. This way I knew exactly how much I had to spend one the small things and I didn’t go overboard way to early. That is a good way to go over budget, little items add up quickly too.
So just make sure you know what is most important to you and get that done first. Then no matter the end result, or how much you actually get to re-do, you’ll be happy with the room.
5. Time
Finally, set a realistic time frame. If you never set a date to be done by this project may never get finished. It will get placed on the back burner, half completed and forgotten for months or even years.
On the other hand don’t make it too constraining either. The more time you give yourself the more likely you are to find the items you need for a better price. Either things will go on sale or you’ll find them on facebook marketplace (or in a thrift store). Since these sites are always changing and new things are being added just giving it time allows you to see more items.
Tip: When you find something you like for a great price DO NOT wait to long to jump on it. It is temping to always look for something better or worry you’re missing out on the next best thing but you may miss something great by waiting too long.
Tip: Once you’ve found what you’re looking for STOP LOOKING! This just creates unnecessary stress.
Happy Redecorating!
Well I hope these 5 tips to decorate a room help you! Decorating should be fun, not stressful. I love researching and comparing items from different sites to find the best deals and items for my house.
Remember not to compromise what you want for what is trendy either. You have to live in your house, no one else. So have fun and build a space that YOU love coming home to.
