9 Selling Apps to Make Money and Declutter

It is spring and spring cleaning is on everyone’s mind! But whether it is spring or not, decluttering your house is a great way to reset. Plus selling unused objects that are all over your house is a great way to make a little extra money quickly. These selling apps will help you reach more people to sell to and make top dollar back on every item.

Using these apps can be very safe if you take a few precautions. If you are meeting in person then always be sure to meet in a public place. To avoid being scammed be wary of wire transfers (just don’t do them really). Also avoid checks as they could bounce due to insufficient funds. When selling things accepting cash or Venmo or a similar money app will leave you with the least headaches.

Facebook Marketplace + Yard Sale Groups

Facebook Market is my go to selling app. It sells to local people in your area and then you meet up face to face. Always meet in a public area. For extra reach and a better chance of selling your items make sure you also join local yard sell facebook groups.

What: You can sell anything on facebook marketplace from clothes to home items to cars. This makes it a great option no matter what you need to sell.

How: In the Facebook app press on the marketplace icon. Next select sell from the top menu. Select what you are selling and follow the instructions to list your item. The last step will be to add yard sell groups to push your post out too. I advise selecting as many as possible that you’re a part of. The more eyes on your post the better.

Fees: It is completely free to use and there are no fees to sell things so what you sell it for is what you get.

Poshmark

Poshmark started as a marketplace for secondhand high end items like Gucci and Prada. Now it has become the go-to place to sell your clothes. I have had some success on the Poshmark selling app and I know some people make a living from it by reselling thrifted items. However I do not feel like the clothing sells as fast as I would prefer but it is still a good option.

What: Poshmark is mostly clothes, bags and shoes although there is the occasional home decor item.

How: To list a piece of clothing you simply open the app and press the sell button on the bottom menu. Then take a couple pictures of the item you’re selling. Fill in all the spaces about size, color and description. Then enter the price you’re selling it for and post!

Fees: For sales under $15 there is a flat fee of $2.95 on every sale. For sale $15 or more then the fee is 20% of the listing price. So keep that in mind when you are pricing your items.

Thred-up

Three-up is the largest online thrift store in the world. It is a great place to shop and save money. You can also sell your clothes to them and not have to worry about selling them yourself like on Poshmark. Although you’ll make less money back this way.

What: Thread-up only accepts and sells clothes. Any clothes of any size for anyone.

How: On the app or website go to selling, then order a free clean out kit to be sent to you. Fill it with your unwanted clothing items and send it into them. They say about 40% of what is mailed in gets accepted. Then wait for your order to be processed, about 5 weeks. Then when your accepted items sell you will get a percentage of the sale. How much you earn depends on how much the item sold for. The exact percentages can be found on the website.

Fees: The mailing process at Thred-up is free but you do not make 100% of the sale. Depending on how much an item sells for you make between 5%-80% of the sale.
