Our Visit to Cow Creek Farm
Since we live in Tampa and had a bit of a drive to get to Cow Creek Farm I chose the 10 AM tour slot. This allowed us time to get ready and drive to the homegrown cattle farm without having to wake up horribly early. I was also hoping it wouldn’t be too hot yet. By the time we left it was definitely starting to heat up but we did miss the worst of it.
Checking In
When we arrived and parked we walked over to the small counter area to check in and pick up our pail of treats to feed the animals. Everything was nicely laid out and close together so it wasn’t difficult to figure out where to go which I appreciated. There are several souvenir type items for sale here as well such as t-shirts, stickers and hats.
Then we got to walk around and see the animals, feed them and take pictures while we waited for the farm tour to start. The goats were walking about freely and were very fun and interactive. My son loved feeding them the treats we got and did such a great job petting them softly.
The Tour
When the tour started the group of maybe 15-20 people gathered around the guide. The whole tour operation is a family operation. It looked like a husband and wife duo running the ticket counter and the tour, grandpa drove the tractor with his grandson in his lap! I loved the family feel and everyone was so nice.
Our guide walked us by each of the animal pens, told us their names and where they were from or how they joined the farm as well as typical behaviors for the animals. For example the donkeys are good protectors and have really loud brays that allow them to stay in contact over large distances. The beginning part of the farm tour takes place at the barn and you get to see donkeys, bunnies, goats, alpacas and the young adolescent highland cows.
Feeding the Scottish Highland Cows
Then the whole group gets to go on a short tractor ride out to the green pasture to see the adult highland cattle. Here you are provided with larger treats to feed the cows so don’t worry about making sure you have enough treats left from the beginning. The cows have large, rough tongues that feel very weird on your hand as you feed them the treats. However the cows are very gentle and eager for the food which makes it a fun, albeit messy, experience. The highland cows are so cute so don’t forget to snap a few pictures while you’re out there. My son wasn’t a huge fan of feeding the cows, I think they scared him a little, but he gave it a shot and he did like petting them. We never felt rushed and you have plenty of time to feed the cows.
My son is obsessed with tractors and trucks so when the tour was over and we had ridden the tractor ride back to the entrance I asked if my son could take a picture with the tractor. I was asking to put him on the ground next to the tractor but the gentleman driving let him sit in the driver’s seat and play with the steering wheel for a second. I think it was his favorite part of the whole day!

Cow Creeks Highland Cows
Scottish Highland cows, also known as Highland cattle, are a fascinating and unique breed of cattle. With their distinctive long horns and long shaggy coat, they’re one of the most easily recognizable bovines in the world. Not to mention how dang CUTE they are!
They originated in the Scottish Highlands and the Western Islands of Scotland, where they were bred to survive in the harsh and often unforgiving climate of the region. Despite their rugged appearance, they’re actually very docile, gentle, and friendly creatures. They’re often used for meat and dairy production, while some farmers even use them to clear land because they are great foragers. No matter how they’re utilized, Scottish Highland cows are beautiful and I love that there is an opportunity to interact with them near Tampa and Orlando.

Tips and Trick to Farm Visits
- Wear shoes that can get dirty. This is a working farm and although the ground wasn’t too bad it is still outdoors. There is dirt and gravel plus if there’s been any rain lately there could be mud in places.
- There is some shade near the fields where you feed the big cows but not much everywhere else so make sure you bring sun protection. Wear sunscreen, hats, sunglasses etc. to protect your skin.
- I also recommend bringing water. You’ll get thirsty in the hot sun and it’s always a good idea to stay hydrated.
- Lastly, try going earlier in the day for cooler temperatures. The good news is the tours are limited to a certain number of people so there’s no need to try and beat the crowds.

Although the price tag is a little higher than most farm activities normally are, I know space is limited and I understand it. It is a super fun day trip and well worth the experience.
